Day of the Dead cultural celebrations
Overview
Day of the Dead traditions continue to be observed through various cultural, religious, and commercial events in Mexico and the United States. In Mexico, traditional observances center on the creation of ofrendas, or altars, which serve as a bridge between the living and the underworld using elements like cempasúchil flowers, pan de muerto, and incense.
In Mexico City, the Grand Day of the Dead Parade is scheduled for Saturday, October 31, beginning at 14:00, traveling from Diana Cazadora to the Zócalo. A 13 km Night Day of the Dead Ride is set for Saturday, October 24. Other regional activities include the ‘Memorias del Mictlán’ festival in Coyoacán and a mural project in Villa de Etla. In Tlalpan, the ‘Celebración de Vida y Muerte Tlalpan 2026’ will feature local artists across 11 towns, including a large-scale installation representing the nine levels of Mictlán to educate visitors on pre-Hispanic symbolism.
Newer festivities in Puerto Vallarta include the Festival de las Almas, featuring an open-air exhibition of 50 monumental Catrinas along the Malecón waterfront. The Art Walk Studio Gallery in downtown Puerto Vallarta will host an event from October 31 to November 2, where 16 visual artists will pair original works with traditional altars. The gallery is also contributing a nearly four-meter-tall Catrina constructed from corn and corn husks.
International observances include the PARCA Festival in Ulldecona, Spain, returning to the Ermita de la Pietat on October 30 and 31. This event features sound performances, the ‘Mercat de l’Eternitat’, and workshops exploring themes of loss and memory. In the United States, El Futuro will host a community event in Durham, North Carolina, on October 31, featuring traditional music, food, and dance performances.
