Overview

HBO Max and DC Studios have greenlit ‘The People v. Gorilla Grodd’, an eight-episode mockumentary series set within the DC Universe. The true crime comedy follows Daily Planet journalist Jimmy Olsen, played by Skyler Gisondo, as he investigates whether the superintelligent Gorilla Grodd was unjustly convicted of murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City.

Co-CEO James Gunn announced the project, which marks the studio’s first venture into the true crime genre. The series is led by showrunners Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault, the creators of ‘American Vandal’. The production features several returning cast members from the 2025 ‘Superman’ film, including Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, while Jimmy Tatro provides the voice for Gorilla Grodd.

Filming has commenced at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Leaked set photos and videos from the Atlanta shoot have provided a first look at the production, showing the use of a practical gorilla suit likely serving as a stand-in for CGI and motion capture. The leaked footage depicts the character in human-like scenarios, such as participating in an a cappella group and wearing graduation robes. The series is part of DCU Chapter 1: ‘Gods and Monsters’ and is expected to arrive following the 2027 release of ‘Man of Tomorrow’.
