Death and burial of former Kogi Governor Ibrahim Idris

Overview

Former Kogi State Governor Ibrahim Idris died in the United Kingdom on September 20, 2026, at the age of 77 following an illness. Idris, who served two terms as governor from 2003 to 2012 under the Peoples Democratic Party, was honored by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other political leaders.

In response to his death, Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo declared a three-day mourning period and ordered flags to be flown at half-mast. The state government announced that Idris would receive a state burial. Governor Ododo constituted a burial committee chaired by Deputy Governor Comrade Joel Salifu Oyibo to oversee the proceedings. Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan visited the family to offer condolences, describing the death as a profound loss to the family, the PDP, and Nigeria.

Following Islamic funeral rites, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, popularly known as ‘Ibro’, was laid to rest at the Gudu Cemetery in Abuja. The ceremony was attended by various political figures, including Governor Ododo, former governors Captain Idris Ichalla Wada, and Yahaya Adoza Bello. Serving as the chief mourner, Governor Ododo noted that Idris’s administration contributed significantly to the infrastructure, education, and healthcare sectors of Kogi State.

Tributes highlighted his legacy as a unifying leader. Bishop John Ibenu described him as a ‘father figure to civil servants’ and a visionary who governed without discrimination, while House of Representatives member Paul Gowon Haruna characterized him as a political mentor who left an indelible mark on the state’s history.
