Death and legacy of aviation influencer Lito Sousa
Overview
Joselito Geraldo de Sousa, a prominent Brazilian aviation specialist and digital influencer known as Lito Sousa, died in São Paulo at age 59 on October 1, 2026. Sousa, who operated the YouTube channel ‘Aviões e Músicas’ to promote aviation safety, passed away following a battle with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), a rare and rapidly progressive neurodegenerative condition caused by prions. His family had made the diagnosis public in August, and his death occurred just 41 days after the diagnosis. Sousa was notably the first person in Brazil to receive the experimental drug ALN-6457 after receiving exceptional authorization from Anvisa.
Following his death, his widow, Mila Seidl, has shared updates on her grieving process. During a YouTube event where she was honored alongside her late husband, Seidl noted the emotional difficulty of receiving tributes alone. She has declined public interviews to prioritize her well-being and her seven-year-old son, Malone, stating she is not yet ready to record content for the ‘Aviões e Músicas’ channel.
Seidl announced plans to travel to the United States with Malone to seek support from family, noting the emotional difficulty of air travel given her husband’s career. Looking ahead, Seidl expressed intentions to establish an institute to support families facing similar medical challenges, particularly those with limited resources. She also plans to eventually share details regarding the experimental medication ALN-6457, which Sousa was the first person in the world to use for his condition.
