Death of Ed Oliver's son
Overview
Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver suffered the loss of his son, Ed Oliver III, following a drowning incident at the family residence in the Houston area. On June 28, the child, who was nearly two years old, was found unresponsive in a residential swimming pool. Although he was rushed to a local hospital, medical professionals were unable to save him.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office investigated the incident and has since ruled the death accidental. Authorities stated that no evidence of criminal wrongdoing was found and have closed the case.
While the tragedy occurred in late June, the news became public in late August after being leaked via social media. This breach of privacy drew criticism from Bills quarterback Josh Allen, who expressed that he felt ‘sad and angry’ regarding the manner in which the information surfaced.
Buffalo Bills General Manager Brandon Beane described the event as an ‘unthinkable tragedy’ and confirmed the organization is providing full assistance to the family.
Following the team’s 36-31 Week 1 victory over the Houston Texans, head coach Joe Brady honored Oliver by awarding him a game ball. Playing in his hometown, Oliver recorded five tackles and a fumble recovery. Brady expressed deep empathy for the player, stating, ‘I can’t fathom what he’s going through,’ and noted that Oliver’s presence on the field was significant for his teammates.
