Death of Indian actor Nana Patekar
Overview
Veteran Indian actor and filmmaker Nana Patekar died at the age of 75 on October 8, 2026, in Goa. He was found unconscious at his residence in Dona Paula and was pronounced dead at Manipal Hospital following a suspected cardiac arrest.
A final post-mortem report from a panel of doctors at the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Bambolim has confirmed that Patekar died of a massive heart attack. Medical findings identified atherosclerotic occlusive coronary artery disease as the natural cause of death, specifically noting that a blood clot in the left main coronary artery blocked blood flow and oxygen to the heart. Medical personnel reportedly performed CPR for approximately 45 minutes before he passed.
Panaji Police had initially registered a case of unnatural death under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) as part of standard legal procedure. However, with the medical report ruling out foul play and the family expressing no objections, authorities are expected to close the case.
Patekar, a recipient of three National Film Awards and the Padma Shri, was cremated with full state honors at his farmhouse in Donje, Pune. The ceremony was attended by various film industry members, including Jackie Shroff. Following the ceremony, his son, Malhar Patekar, spoke regarding his father’s humanitarian legacy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed condolences, praising the actor’s versatility and creative presence.
Following his death, a resurfaced video from the promotions of the film ‘Vanvaas’ gained attention. In the footage, Patekar discussed a casting dispute regarding the 1989 film ‘Parinda’, telling actor Anil Kapoor that he had ‘bullied’ him during that production. Patekar noted he had originally rehearsed for a different role before the casting was changed, a shift that ultimately led to his performance as the character Anna.
