Health and detention of Imran Khan’s sisters

Overview

Noreen Niazi, sister of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, was hospitalized at the Punjab Institute of Cardiology after experiencing chest pain, rapid heartbeat, and difficulty breathing while detained at Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore. Medical staff investigated a possible heart attack pending blood test results.

Niazi and Uzma Khan have been held under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) ordinance since September 21, following the arrest of another sister, Aleema Khan. The Punjab government recently extended the detention of all three sisters by 30 days, a decision currently facing legal challenges in the Lahore High Court.

Ali Amin Gandapur, former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister, has demanded the immediate release of the three sisters, describing Niazi as innocent. Legal counsel for the family has alleged that Niazi is being held unlawfully and that family members were not notified of her transfer to the hospital.

Following her medical evaluations, Niazi has been transferred back to Kot Lakhpat Jail. Medical examinations, including an electrocardiogram and a Troponin-T test, yielded normal results, indicating no immediate signs of serious cardiac complications. Doctors determined that an angiography was not required, and her blood pressure was stabilized through medication.

In the Senate, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry stated that the government is ensuring the health and welfare of detainees is protected. Senator Azam Swati described the hospital transfer as a “positive humanitarian step” and urged the government to facilitate family visits for Niazi’s daughters.
