Detran-RJ labor strike ends
Overview
Employees at Detran-RJ initiated an indefinite strike, approved by the Sindetran-RJ union, to demand career restructuring and improved employee valuation. The labor action primarily disrupted vehicle and driver’s license services, though identity card issuance remained operational through outsourced teams. To facilitate students preparing for exams like Enem, the agency had previously offered walk-in identity card services without appointments.
In response to the strike, the agency implemented measures to mitigate public impact, such as extending deadlines and allowing users to return to service units within five business days of normalization without new appointments. While some practical exams were rescheduled, more than 50% of electronic exams continued to proceed regularly. Detran-RJ noted that any exams canceled due to the strike must be rescheduled by users without additional fees.
The agency clarified that the union’s demands regarding the Salary and Position Plan are matters outside its direct management, despite its participation in meetings to improve the proposal. Additionally, Detran-RJ stated it was requiring the union to comply with legislation mandating that at least 30% of the workforce be maintained during the strike.
The strike, which began on October 7, was suspended by the Sindetran-RJ union on Friday, October 23. Detran-RJ announced that offices would return to normal operations on Monday, October 26. To address service disruptions, the agency announced that vehicle owners who exceeded the 30-day deadline for vehicle transfers due to the strike will be exempt from fines, provided they had existing appointments or were unable to schedule services during the stoppage.
