Deutsche Telekom fiber optic network expansion
Overview
Deutsche Telekom is expanding its fiber optic infrastructure in Germany through strategic acquisitions, real estate partnerships, and regional construction projects.
Through an asset deal involving the insolvency proceedings of ruhrfibre Essen Netz GmbH & Co. KG and metrofibre GmbH, Telekom has acquired networks covering approximately 87,000 households in the Essen and Düsseldorf regions. This acquisition, facilitated by the law firm Dentons, follows a previous acquisition of the DOKOM21 network, which is expected to connect an additional 25,000 households by the end of 2025. Because the previous owner ended its cooperation with competitor Vodafone in September 2026, affected customers may need to switch to Telekom contracts. Telekom intends to integrate these networks into its own architecture, making the infrastructure available to both direct customers and wholesale partners.
In addition to acquisitions, Telekom has entered into large-scale partnerships with the German real estate industry to expand connectivity for seven million residential units using an open network architecture. Regional efforts continue in Allershausen, where 15 kilometers of cable are being installed, and in Baden-Württemberg, where projects in 833 municipalities could reach 1.8 million customers.
As of the third quarter of 2026, Telekom’s fiber network exceeded 900,000 kilometers in length, providing speeds up to 2,000 Mbit/s to 14.4 million households and businesses. Deployment speed has trended upward, with 255,000 new connections added in September 2026. Additionally, a self-financed project in Frankfurt’s Schwanheim district has begun, aiming to serve 11,000 customers by spring 2028.
