Digital transformation in Spanish agri-food sector

Overview

The Spanish agri-food sector is undergoing a digital transformation through the implementation of artificial intelligence and data-driven platforms.

In Castilla y León, Telefónica Tech has launched two AI pilot projects via the Datagia Digital Agri-food Platform. One project, in collaboration with the Carne de Ávila Regulatory Council, uses AI to analyze livestock data to optimize feedlot exit timing for profitability. A second pilot for Santa Teresa Gourmet utilizes shared sector data to improve production planning and demand anticipation.

Broadening this digital shift, studies supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) have tracked advancements in automation and digital tool usage within the pig farming industry between 2022 and 2025. Additionally, the Institute of Agri-food Research and Technology (IRTA) has updated the Spanish Pig Data Bank (BDporc) platform, providing producers with comparative data to benchmark performance across both white and Iberian pig sectors.
