Discussions on vocal aging in prominent female singers

Recent discussions have emerged regarding how aging affects the vocal performance and characteristics of prominent female singers.

In Italy, the release of the single ‘Vento di passione’—a collaboration between Mina and the late Pino Daniele featuring Giorgia—has prompted debate over the aging process. At 86, Mina’s voice has undergone significant changes. Rather than being viewed as a loss of quality, these physiological changes are described as a reflection of time, where the different texture and color of her voice create a “unique musical language” that embraces natural aging rather than attempting to artificially recreate her younger vocal power.

In a separate linguistic study published in the Nordic Journal of English Studies, researchers from the University of Copenhagen and Aarhus University analyzed Madonna’s voice through television interviews spanning from the 1980s to 2021. The study found that her vocal pitch does not follow typical female aging patterns, such as the deepening of voice often associated with menopause. Instead, her pitch has followed an irregular, non-linear trajectory. Linguist Anna Bothe Jespersen noted that the singer’s voice appears younger than her chronological age, suggesting possible deliberate vocal adaptation to maintain a youthful, global identity.
