Disney Abu Dhabi theme park development
Overview
Disney has reaffirmed its commitment to developing a theme park resort on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. Despite regional instability and fuel-price volatility in the Middle East, company leadership stated they remain ‘fully committed’ to the project, addressing speculation that the conflict might force the company or its partner, Miral, to abandon the investment. Development efforts have progressed toward the planning stages, with Disney Imagineers conducting research at local sites such as the Al Ain Oasis and Sultan Bin Zayed Fort to ensure the resort is ‘authentically Disney and distinctly Emirati.’ Recent concept artwork for the neighboring Yas Point development suggests the resort may include outdoor entertainment features, such as fireworks displays. New details regarding the project were recently shared in the Disney+ documentary, ‘Worldbuilders’. During the film, Disney CEO Bob Iger described the region as ‘an oasis of the world’ and highlighted the company’s interest in Abu Dhabi’s forward-looking approach. The project aims to leverage the emirate’s strategic location, which is within a four-hour reach of approximately one-third of the global population. Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, stated the project is designed to pay homage to the past while offering a glimpse of the future. Creative teams are reportedly using Abu Dhabi’s diverse biomes as inspiration for the park’s storytelling and place-making efforts to integrate the local environment into the Disney universe. In a significant departure from the traditional themed lands used in Disney parks since 1955, the Abu Dhabi location is expected to be organized into ‘biomes.’ This concept, designed by Walt Disney Imagineering and to be operated by Miral, uses the region’s natural environments, such as deserts and coral reefs, as backdrops for Disney stories.
