Dominican Republic gender violence response

Overview

In late July 2026 the Dominican Republic expanded its response to gender‑based violence. On July 26 the Procuraduría General opened an Integrated Justice Center in Neyba, Bahoruco, offering multidisciplinary services—prosecutors, psychologists, forensic doctors, social workers and free legal representation—through the National Service for Legal Representation of Victims (Relevic). The launch highlighted the high volume of complaints, with 192 cases reported in Bahoruco from January to May and about 73,000 nationwide in 2025, underscoring the need for better reporting and support.

Three days later the Ministry of Women broadened the National Consultation for Reducing Violence Against Women by adding the Federación Dominicana de Municipios, mobilising 5,000 men across the country to contribute ideas for prevention policies.

On August 6 the Ministry of Defense, led by Lieutenant General Carlos Antonio Fernández Onofre, joined the Ministry of Women to hold a national consultation with hundreds of male military personnel. Participants completed questionnaires on social norms, masculinity and conflict resolution. Backed by the World Bank and the United Nations, the exercise aims to shape more effective public policies and will be extended to other sectors, reinforcing a multi‑sectoral approach to curbing violence against women.
