Economic and infrastructural developments in Rio Grande do_N

Overview

Rio Grande do Norte is navigating a complex economic landscape characterized by significant industrial growth alongside fiscal and infrastructural challenges.

Recent data highlights a surge in gold exports from Currais Novos, driven by Aura Minerals’ Borborema Project. Between January and June 2026, gold exports reached US$ 157.5 million, a substantial increase from the US$ 5.5 million recorded between 2020 and 2024. While the state experienced the largest drop in unemployment among Brazil’s federative units during the second quarter of 2026, it continues to face fiscal strain. The National Treasury has disbursed R$ 796.50 million for state commitments since 2016, recovering less than half of that amount. Furthermore, public spending on health remains below the constitutional minimum, and the state’s pension system faces a deficit.

To support future economic expansion, the state government and Sudene are conducting feasibility studies for a new railway section. This project aims to connect the Transnordestina railway corridor to Mossoró and Caiçara do Norte, linking to a future Green Industry Port. The expansion is intended to lower logistics costs for mining, oil, gas, and renewable energy sectors. Concurrently, the ‘Futuros Verdes no Nordeste’ project is mapping opportunities to support low-carbon industrial chains and the growing wind and solar industries in the region.
