Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in Budapest

Overview

In early September 2026, while speaking in Budapest at the 27th International Congress of the Society for East Christian Law, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew called for a fraternal gathering of the Patriarchs of Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem on 30 November.

On 5 September, the Patriarch presided over the inauguration of the ‘Fanarion’ Orthodox Christian Dialogue Center and the Holy Church of the Three Hierarchs in Budapest. The center, located in the Hungarian capital, was donated to the Ecumenical Patriarchate by the Hungarian State in 2018 and recently underwent renovation funded by the state. The ceremony was attended by clergy, religious leaders, ambassadors, and representatives from the Hungarian and Greek governments.

During his remarks, Bartholomew emphasized a ‘primacy of service’ within the community of churches, drawing upon the historical traditions of the Pentarchy. He also highlighted ecological responsibility and interfaith dialogue, describing the Phanarion as a meeting point for theology, culture, and science that requires cooperation between science, politics, economy, and religion to address social issues.
