Egypt diplomatic activities at UN General Assembly

During the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty engaged in various diplomatic efforts focused on regional stability, international partnerships, and multilateral reform.

Abdelatty addressed the Palestinian cause, expressing a “categorical rejection” of Palestinian displacement and condemning Israeli settlement expansion and annexation attempts in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. He characterized the situation as a “historical turning point” and called for unified Arab action. His mission also included hosting a ministerial meeting of the G8+ developing nations regarding the Palestinian cause and a roundtable on early recovery in Gaza.

In pursuit of economic and bilateral objectives, Abdelatty met with the Business Council for International Understanding to advocate for increased American investment in Egypt’s private sector and infrastructure, emphasizing the need to translate political momentum into economic partnerships. Discussions with Pakistan’s leadership, including Deputy Prime Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, focused on strengthening political, security, and economic ties, specifically through the activation of the Egypt-Pakistan Business Council to facilitate investment in the Suez Canal Economic Zone.

Expanding his focus to global governance, Abdelatty advocated for the interests of the Global South. He promoted reforms within the United Nations and the Security Council to ensure fairer representation for African and developing nations. His discussions also covered reforming the international economic structure, addressing the debt crisis in developing countries, climate finance, and sustainable development. Additionally, he met with candidates for the UN Secretary-General position and signed a memorandum of understanding with the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations to enhance cultural cooperation.
