Egypt regional diplomatic and security engagement

Overview

Egypt has engaged in a series of high-level diplomatic discussions aimed at addressing regional stability, maritime security, and economic cooperation. In mid-August, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty coordinated with officials from the United Kingdom and Bahrain to avoid military escalation and protect energy security. These efforts expanded to include Cyprus, focusing on energy and investment, and Ukraine, where President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi discussed trade and a political settlement to the Russia-Ukraine war.

In early September, diplomatic outreach extended to Oman and Italy. Discussions with Oman focused on de-escalating regional tensions and ensuring the security of the Strait of Hormuz. During meetings with Italy, officials addressed the Palestinian issue, Libya, Sudan, and the Horn of Africa. Abdelatty underscored that Nile water security is an “existential issue for Egypt and a matter of national security,” a position Italy reaffirmed by supporting the principle of non-harm in the Nile Basin.

Continuing these efforts on September 4, Abdelatty held further discussions with Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, advocating for the resumption of negotiations between the United States and Iran using the Islamabad Memorandum as a framework. He also reiterated the importance of safeguarding maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. In separate communications, Abdelatty expressed solidarity with Bahrain’s security and sovereignty. Furthermore, in talks with U.S. advisor Massad Boulos, he emphasized the humanitarian crisis in Sudan and noted that simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections are vital for stability in Libya.
