Elderly care and aging population initiatives

Various regional initiatives in Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe have emerged to support elderly populations through social, medical, and community-based programs.

In Argentina and the Dominican Republic, efforts have focused on specific care models and awareness. Argentine centers organized recreational events and prepared a campaign titled ‘No olvides recordar’ (Do not forget to remember) for World Alzheimer’s Day. In the Dominican Republic, medical professionals held a symposium to discuss palliative care, specifically addressing topics such as ‘Palliative sedation, not euthanasia’ to promote humanized patient care.

Following the International Day of Older Persons, broader demographic challenges are being addressed in Uruguay and Argentina. Uruguay launched a seminar titled ‘Desafíos Locales del Uruguay Longevo’ (Local Challenges of Long-lived Uruguay) to tackle ageism and social isolation. Similarly, the municipality of General Pico, Argentina, introduced ‘Mes Plateado’ (Silver Month) to promote active aging, caregiver training for cognitive decline, and the visibility of elderly rights.

Recent efforts to mark the International Day of Older Persons have expanded these activities. In Spain, Huelva renewed an agreement with AFA Huelva to fund Alzheimer's prevention, Almería hosted a congress to combat ageism, and Mos provided digital literacy training for seniors. In Argentina, Comodoro Rivadavia trained over 80 caregivers to improve autonomy for those living with dementia. In Uruguay, the municipality of Florida organized a seminar regarding the health and social integration challenges of a growing elderly population.
