Electric vehicle development and infrastructure in Italy

Overview

The electric vehicle landscape in Italy is characterized by both historical development and modern infrastructure expansion. Early efforts in electric mobility were exemplified by Fiat’s 1990 conversion of the Panda 750 Fire into the Panda Elettra, a prototype featuring a 19 hp DC motor and a lead-acid battery pack that reduced passenger capacity to two.

Currently, the nation is seeing continuous growth in electric vehicle adoption, supported by a public charging network that has exceeded 78,000 units nationwide. While infrastructure distribution remains uneven—with Lombardy leading with over 17,000 installations and Lazio following with nearly 7,000—new localized expansions are underway to promote the ecological transition.

In Montefiascone, the local administration has identified 11 strategic public areas for new charging stations, including railway stations and lakeside parking. Additionally, in the Emilia-Romagna region, the Regional FESR Program 2021-2027 is facilitating installations at healthcare facilities such as Sant’Anna Hospital in Cona and Cittadella San Rocco in Ferrara. These projects involve management concessions to groups such as Hera and Edison.

Further expansion is occurring in Modena and Florence. In Modena, a memorandum of understanding with T-Carica srl aims to install 10 new public charging stations at the company's expense over the next three years, supplementing existing agreements with operators like Enel X, Hera, and Be Charge. In Florence, the city council has approved 14 new charging points powered by renewable energy. Managed by Plenitude On The Road Srl, this project includes both new installations and technological replacements to bring the city's total network to 250 next-generation charging points.
