Este Festival in Dominican Republic

Overview

The Dominican Republic Ministry of Culture organized the inaugural ‘Este Festival’ to showcase the artistic, gastronomic, and traditional heritage of the country’s eastern provinces. Prior to the event, Minister of Culture Roberto Ángel Salcedo announced that the festival would be dedicated to artisan Genaro Reyes, known as ‘Cayuco,’ who was also appointed as an honorary advisor on cultural industry policies to support the national artisan sector.

The festival was inaugurated at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) campus in Higüey. The event aimed to promote cultural decentralization by highlighting the identities of El Seibo, Hato Mayor, La Altagracia, La Romana, Monte Plata, and San Pedro de Macorís.

The 2026 edition of the festival took place from August 28 to 30. During the opening ceremony, Salcedo emphasized the role of the event in supporting regional traditions. In recognition of his efforts, the municipality of Higüey presented Salcedo with the Coat of Arms of the Villa Salvaleón de Higüey.

The festival concluded with a ceremony led by Salcedo that recognized various cultural managers, artists, and artisans. Additionally, the Senate of the Republic presented recognition scrolls to six individuals for their contributions to the preservation and promotion of Dominican cultural expressions. A notable highlight of the closing ceremonies was the presentation of the documentary ‘5,000 Días: El Reto de Cristóbal Rodríguez’, which documents visual artist Cristóbal Rodríguez’s 14-year commitment to creating a new work of art every 24 hours.
