Financial and administrative strain on European solo workers
Overview
Financial and structural pressures on European solo entrepreneurs are intensifying, particularly in Spain. A Qonto study found that 46% of micro-businesses across Germany, France, Italy, and Spain reduced or stopped drawing personal salaries, a figure reaching 50% in Spain. This is compounded by a significant aversion to debt, with 45% of European firms having never used external financing.
In Spain, the rise of “pluriactividad”—combining a salaried job with a micro-business—reached 274,463 workers by June 2026. Additionally, the cost of covering a month of absence for a self-employed worker is estimated at €2,339.90, exceeding the average net monthly income of €2,298.
Administrative burdens remain a critical issue. The National Federation of Associations of Self-Employed Workers (ATA) reports that bureaucracy costs the Spanish self-employed sector approximately 11.77 billion euros annually. More than 3.4 million workers spend an average of 226 hours per year on administrative, fiscal, and Social Security obligations, an increase of 26 hours since December. ATA President Lorenzo Amor noted that increasing regulations, such as the “Verifactu” invoicing system and EU Artificial Intelligence regulations, prevent work-life balance. ATA has proposed simplifying tax filings from four annual declarations to one or two.
Further structural costs are highlighted by the Union of Professionals and Self-Employed Workers (UPTA). For those operating with rented commercial spaces, annual structural costs can reach approximately 35,760 euros, or roughly 3,000 euros per month. In this scenario, rent, electricity, and Social Security contributions (RETA) represent nearly 69% of the total structural burden. In regions like Castilla y León, annual costs are estimated at a lower 29,760 euros based on a monthly rent of 1,000 euros.
