FAA reforms and Boeing self‑certification

Overview
In mid‑June 2026 the FAA and EASA agreed to jointly certify Boeing’s 737 MAX 7 and MAX 10, with the FAA targeting a summer approval for the MAX 7 and a year‑end decision for the MAX 10, while EASA expected to finish its review within weeks. A week later the FAA proposed aligning U.S. certification requirements with EASA’s to cut duplicated safety findings and streamline approvals for Boeing, Airbus, Embraer and Bombardier, a plan reiterated on 25 June to provide more predictable schedules and deeper FAA‑EASA cooperation.
On 16 July the FAA announced that Boeing would again be permitted to issue airworthiness certificates for all newly‑produced 737 MAX and 787 Dreamliner jets, citing several months of data that showed consistent production quality. The agency kept heightened oversight—ongoing inspections, audits, monitoring of the production system and safety‑management processes—and raised Boeing’s monthly production cap to 47 aircraft.
Effective 20 July 2026, the self‑certification authority was formally restored after an eight‑month trial that showed no significant quality differences between FAA and Boeing certification processes. The FAA emphasized continued close supervision, especially after the 2024 Alaska Airlines incident.
Boeing is close to securing regulatory approval for an engine anti‑ice system fix required for both the MAX 7 and MAX 10. About 30 MAX 7 and nine MAX 10 jets are built and awaiting delivery. Certification of the smaller MAX 7 remains targeted for this summer, and the larger MAX 10 is 98 % through flight‑test certification.
On 29 July Boeing completed the final certification flight for the MAX 10, logging over 2,060 flight hours and confirming key systems such as the engine anti‑ice and enhanced angle‑of‑attack sensor. The program now moves to final safety and design reviews, with FAA certification still expected later in 2026 and first customer deliveries anticipated in 2027.
