Fatal and serious motorway accidents in Europe

Overview

A series of serious traffic accidents occurred on major motorways in Germany and Switzerland in September 2026.

On the A3 in Germany, a 37-year-old man died when his vehicle overturned while attempting to avoid a truck with Dutch registration; the truck fled the scene. A pregnant woman and a child sustained life-threatening injuries. In Switzerland, a head-on collision on the A16 near Moutier resulted in one female fatality and two serious injuries.

On the A6 motorway in Germany, two separate incidents caused significant disruption. In Sinsheim, a truck veered off course and struck a stationary vehicle on the hard shoulder, critically injuring a 36-year-old driver who had to be rescued by firefighters. Near Öhringen, a truck transporting dangerous goods overturned, causing the driver to sustain serious injuries. Emergency services established a 150-meter danger zone and closed the motorway in both directions. Clearing the site required transferring the cargo to another vehicle with assistance from BASF. During the response to the hazardous goods crash, a secondary collision involving four vehicles occurred on the opposite side of the motorway, resulting in one minor injury.

Following the multi-car collision near Öhringen, German police and experts issued warnings regarding the dangers of ‘rubbernecking’. Psychologist Felicitas Heyne noted that while assessing danger is a natural reflex, the behavior becomes hazardous when drivers slow down, stop, or use smartphones to observe accident scenes, potentially leading to further secondary accidents.
