Fatal drowning and graffiti investigation in Golden Ears

Overview

On August 3, a man died after slipping into the Gold Creek Lower Falls area of Golden Ears Provincial Park while attempting to photograph a waterfall. Despite rescue efforts by Maple Ridge Fire Rescue and paramedics, the victim was transported to the hospital in critical condition and subsequently passed away.

Following the incident, BC Parks identified graffiti sprayed on boulders near Gold Creek as a “misguided tribute” to the deceased. Officials condemned the act as vandalism that harms the natural environment.

As of late August, the Maple Ridge RCMP are investigating the incident as mischief. The investigation focuses on an unknown male who spray-painted a message on boulders near the Lower Falls trail in an attempt to memorialize the individual who drowned. While police expressed sympathy to the family and friends of the deceased, they emphasized that vandalism within a protected area remains a criminal offence that can harm the environment, impact other park users, and result in community cleanup costs.

Officers are working with BC Parks staff to identify the individual involved. Authorities have requested that anyone with information contact the Maple Ridge RCMP regarding file# 2026-15782.
