Fatal drowning and missing persons incidents in Brazil

Overview

Multiple fatal drowning incidents were reported across different regions of Brazil in late August 2026.

In the Bahia region, four children died after an accident involving an improvised boat in a reservoir in Paramirim. Additionally, a father and son died in Planaltino during an incident involving a water tank; authorities are investigating whether the cause was drowning or electric shock.

In other parts of the country, a 46-year-old man died at a resort in Porto Velho, Rondônia, while firefighters conducted search operations. In Mato Grosso, a 28-year-old man was swept away by a strong current in the Jauru River while swimming with friends and siblings.

By August 31, search and rescue efforts continued as authorities recovered the body of a 57-year-old man in Pirambu, Sergipe, following a suspected drowning. Meanwhile, in Rio Grande do Sul, firefighters are using search dogs and thermal drones to locate four hikers—comprising a man, two women, and a teenager—who disappeared in the Tajuvas Canyon after deviating from a recommended path.
