Fatal road collision in County Cavan
Overview
James McHugh, a former Donegal footballer and 1992 All-Ireland winner, was killed in a car collision on the N3 near Drummallaght between Virginia and Cavan. At the time of the accident, McHugh was driving a vehicle that collided with a van. His wife, Noreen McHugh, was a passenger in the car and was airlifted to Beaumont Hospital with serious injuries.
Following the initial report of McHugh’s death, it was later confirmed that Noreen McHugh also passed away at Beaumont Hospital. The driver of the van, a man in his 50s, sustained minor injuries. Gardaí have requested that witnesses or motorists with dashcam footage of the area between 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM on the day of the incident come forward to assist with investigations.
The joint funeral for the couple was held at Saint Cartha's Church in Kilcar, Co Donegal. James McHugh was widely recognized as an All-Star footballer, while Noreen McHugh was highly regarded for her twenty years of service as the secretary of the local parish school.
Bishop Niall Coll of the Diocese of Raphoe expressed deep sorrow, stating that their deaths have “cast a dark cloud over the entire diocese, county and beyond.” To pay their respects, members of the 1992 championship team and current players formed a guard of honour outside the church. The service was attended by a large number of mourners from the local community and the GAA club.
