Financial inclusion and service expansion in Latin America
Overview
Financial inclusion and service modernization efforts are expanding across several Latin American nations through educational initiatives, strategic planning, and new technological tools.
In the Dominican Republic, efforts have focused on both education and digital tools. Banco Popular Dominicano reported significant growth in its ‘Academia Finanzas con Propósito’ platform, which provides courses on savings and investment. Additionally, the institution COOPCREDI launched a new debit card to assist SMEs and entrepreneurs with digital transformation and payment integration. Recent data from the Association of Multiple Banks (ABA) shows a 44% increase in physical banking access points between 2015 and 2023. This growth, which saw access points rise from 4,704 to 6,777, was driven by the expansion of ATMs and banking sub-agents that serve as extensions of banks in remote communities.
In Paraguay, the National Financial Inclusion Strategy (ENIF) 2026–2031 was launched to expand access to formal services and strengthen regulatory frameworks, specifically targeting vulnerable populations and MSMEs. Meanwhile, in Venezuela, the Cámara Industrial, Comercial y Agrícola de Falcón (CICAF) held meetings to foster synergy between the productive sector and various public and private banks to drive the local economy.
In Argentina, Banco Credicoop is intensifying its support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within the oil, gas, and mining sectors. This strategic shift aims to address the evolving needs of suppliers in the Vaca Muerta region by providing tailored financial tools, including short- and long-term financing, leasing, and equipment importation.
