Financial management in Portuguese football clubs
Overview
Recent developments in Portuguese football highlight significant financial management and legal challenges within club management companies (SADs).
Sporting SAD has moved forward with major financial and administrative changes. Following a General Assembly held at the Estádio José Alvalade, shareholders approved a significant increase in executive remuneration, raising salaries for executive administrators by approximately 18.7%. Under this new policy, President Frederico Varandas will see his fixed compensation rise from 300,000 to 354,000 euros for the 2026/27 fiscal year, with total potential earnings reaching 534,000 euros when including variable components. Other executives, including Francisco Salgado Zenha and André Bernardo, are also subject to the increase.
To support investment and renewal strategies, the assembly authorized the SAD to enter the market for bond issuances up to a maximum of 150 million euros, a measure valid until October 2031. This follows the approval of the 2025/26 annual report, which recorded a profit of approximately 34.7 million euros, marking the fifth consecutive year of positive results.
In a separate matter, the Póvoa de Varzim Central Civil Court has ordered the seizure of assets belonging to SAD do Leixões, its majority shareholder Play-Fair, and its president, André Castro. This precautionary measure follows claims by Brazilian businessman Anderson Fellipe Gonçalves regarding 18 unpaid loans totaling roughly 5.06 million euros. The court cited the SAD’s severe financial difficulties, including negative equity of 10.41 million euros and liquidity issues affecting taxes and salaries.
