Fire at Centro Comercial de Passagem in João Pessoa

A fire broke out at the Centro Comercial de Passagem in João Pessoa on August 27, reportedly originating in a mobile phone shop. While firefighters brought the blaze under control by early evening, the incident caused damage to several units, with four boxes suffering total loss. Four individuals required medical attention for smoke inhalation, though no serious injuries were reported. Authorities, including the municipal Secretary of Urban Development, Marmuthe Cavalcanti, did not rule out arson as a possible cause, and investigators began reviewing camera footage to determine the cause.

Following the incident, the Secretariat of Urban Development and the CCP Permittees Commission signed a commitment term to allow for a partial reopening of the center. This reopening is limited to sectors and blocks not directly affected by the fire. Due to a lack of electricity, the center will operate on a restricted schedule from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Saturday. As part of the safety requirements, the Commission must submit a new electrical project within 30 days. Areas directly impacted by the blaze remain cordoned off by the Municipal Civil Defense.
