Flooding in Malaysia
Overview
Heavy rainfall has triggered widespread flooding across various regions in Malaysia. In early October, evacuations were reported in Perak and Sabah. In Perak, 58 residents from 17 families were moved to temporary evacuation centers in the Hilir Perak and Larut, Matang, and Selama districts, specifically at the Kampung Degong Community Hall and the Kampung Menteri Mosque. In Sabah, the Moyog River reached a critical level of 9.12 meters, impacting 15 villages in Penampang and forcing 118 victims to relocate. While 12 roads were submerged, they remained passable.
By mid-October, flash floods affected Kedah and Selangor. In Kedah’s Kubang Pasu district, 26 residents from eight families were evacuated to the Dewan Lembah Keriang relief center. In Selangor, rapid water level rises impacted areas including Subang, Ara Damansara, Kota Damansara, and Subang Bestari, causing traffic disruptions near the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport and the USJ7 LRT station.
In late October, heavy rain in Penang caused flash floods and property damage. In Seberang Perai, floodwaters approximately one foot deep affected roughly 20 houses in Taman Cantek, Butterworth, and impacted Jalan Jelawat in Seberang Jaya. Additionally, in Balik Pulau, a 20-foot tall durian tree fell, damaging a vehicle and a house structure. No injuries were reported, and authorities noted that water levels in the affected areas began to recede.
