The Gators opened their 2026 season under Sumrall with a dominant 66-21 victory over the Florida Atlantic Owls at Spurrier/Florida Field. During the first quarter, Philo connected with receiver Vernell Brown III for a 49-yard touchdown, marking the first score of Sumrall’s tenure in Gainesville. Philo completed 16 of 21 passes for 275 yards and three passing touchdowns, while also adding a rushing touchdown. Brown III recorded a career-high 117 yards, and running back Jadan Baugh led the ground attack with 160 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

The Gators' offense amassed 624 total yards during the debut. The team is scheduled to host Campbell in Week 2 before entering SEC play against Auburn in Week 3.
