Iranian repression of activists, prisoners, women & Baha'i
Entities: Hadiseh Marvardi · Khshayar Rezvani · Mashhad · Iran · Tehran
Overview
The wave of repression continued through July 2026. In Evin Prison, British detainee Craig Foreman's sentence was lengthened by two years, bringing his term to twelve years after he spoke to the media. The court added the term without a lawyer, translator or chance to defend himself, prompting the UK to appoint a special envoy for detained Britons and UN experts to label the detention arbitrary and file a complaint with the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. The couple remains on hunger strike—Craig on his 68th day and Lindsay on her 59th—showing severe weight loss and health decline. On 12 July guards raided Evin’s women’s ward, removing about 50 inmates for transfer to Qarchak Prison, violating separation policies and sparking protests, solitary confinement of two women, and exposing children to trauma. Subsequent arrests and sentences targeted activists such as Shadi Shadman, Leila Afarin (denied treatment for a malignant brain tumour), photographer Negin Kiani, student Raheleh Moeini, Kurdish artist Neda Dadehjani, and activist Fatemeh Jami. On 19 July Tehran’s Branch 1088 sentenced singer Anita Papist to 74 lashes, confiscated her passport and blocked her phone for “offending public decency.” Rights groups said the punishment breached international standards. Two days later a similar verdict was handed to documentary photographer Tahmineh Monzavi, who also received 74 lashes, a two‑year travel ban and a prohibition on artistic activity, underscoring an intensified crackdown on women artists. On 26 July the Tehran Court of Appeal confirmed harsh sentences for poet Khshayar Rezvani (three years seven months prison, travel ban, online restrictions) and activist Hadiseh Marvardi (three years prison, travel ban), both linked to the December 2024 nationwide protests.
