Forest conservation and cultural initiatives in Italy
Overview
Recent activities in Italy have emphasized the intersection of forest ecology, cultural heritage, and sustainable tourism. In the Aniene Valley, the fifth edition of the ‘Trekking della Liberazione’ concluded, an event organized by the ‘Cammino della Liberazione della Valle dell’Aniene – APS’ to commemorate the partisan Resistance and Nazi-Fascist massacres of 1943-44. The 2026 edition focused on supporting small valley centers facing depopulation and economic decline by highlighting local agriculture and community associations.
Environmental and scientific efforts continue to expand. Research in the Altopiano forests has highlighted the physiological benefits of forest immersion, or ‘Shinrin-yoku,’ noting that inhaling Biogenic Volatile Organic Compounds, such as terpenes from spruce and larch, triggers responses that aid mental and physical regeneration. In Camporosso, Valcanale, the ‘Sentiero del Faggio Secolare’ is scheduled for inauguration on October 10 as part of the European REGENERATE project. This path features natural art installations from the AESON Festival centered on a centuries-old beech tree stump to promote forest knowledge.
New regional initiatives have also emerged. In the Castrocielo and Colle San Magno regions, the ‘Sentiero della Botte’ was inaugurated to promote slow tourism by connecting Selva Don Cristoforo to the Colle San Magno Adventure Park via an ancient water conduit route. Meanwhile, in the Monferrato area, seven municipalities are working to reconstitute the Assembly of Mayors for the ‘Bosco delle Sorti – La Communa’ natural safeguard zone. Supported by the Piedmont Region, this group aims to protect 1,800 hectares of forest and preserve historical collective management traditions.
