Overview
Formula 1 technical regulations have undergone several stages of evolution aimed at altering car performance and aerodynamics.
Initial technical adjustments, including revised brake ducts, rear wings, and bargeboards, were implemented to produce “tangible” gains in overtaking potential. Technical director Ross Brawn noted these changes served as a preliminary step toward a larger regulatory overhaul planned for 2021.
Subsequent regulations approved by the FIA for the 2027 season introduce more significant design shifts. These include reducing the front section of the car floor by approximately 30 cm, which may allow cars to run lower and potentially reintroduce the ‘rake’ design concept. Additionally, power distribution is set to shift to a 58/42 thermal-to-electric ratio, a move expected to disrupt current development cycles and team chassis management.
To further lower energy consumption, the 2027 aerodynamic regulations aim to reduce downforce and drag. Mercedes Technical Deputy Director Simone Resta noted these modifications involve adjustments to rectify current trends. Specific measures include banning the proliferation of profiles on the rear wing, reducing rear wing volume, and limiting elements near exhaust exits and the rear impact structure. The regulations also target the car's floor by shortening the central portion near the T-tray area and reducing elements in the floor's entry section to contain aerodynamic load.
