Fortuna Düsseldorf post‑relegation overhaul
Entities: Dominique Heintz · Alexander Ende · Lasse Rieß · Philipp Förster · Fortuna Düsseldorf
Overview
Fortuna Düsseldorf’s post‑relegation rebuild has accelerated through a series of personnel and cultural changes. In May, the supervisory board dismissed sport director Sven Mislintat and installed former Arminia Bielefeld executive Samir Arabi, tasking him with a rapid squad overhaul while head coach Alexander Ende remains in place.
June brought internal friction: supporters criticised board infighting and unrealistic announcements, fearing that off‑field disputes could undermine the rebuild. At the same time, the club’s sweeping cost‑cutting programme triggered 17 unfair‑dismissal lawsuits from former staff, including a case challenging a clause that terminates contracts outside the top two divisions.
July saw a locker‑room cultural reset, with Ende and Arabi imposing a mobile‑phone ban to curb a “toxic” atmosphere and emphasise character in new signings. Veteran midfielder Matthias Zimmermann praised the renewed team spirit. The transfer window remained turbulent – the near‑sale of Elias Egouli collapsed, Yannik Engelhardt left for SC Freiburg on a low fee, and Dutch right‑back Steven van der Sloot joined on a modest release‑clause deal.
By early August the squad was largely rebuilt, adding goalkeeper Lasse Rieß, defender Dominique Heintz, midfielder Philipp Förster and several other experienced players. Ende highlighted injury prevention and squad fitness as key to avoiding the pitfalls that led to relegation, while the club continues to rely on midfield anchor Yassine Bouchama as a central figure in its promotion push.
