France fuel subsidy deadline extension

Entities: France · Système d’immatriculation des véhicules (SIV) · French Ministry of Economy and Finance · fuel premium for low‑income commuters · Mobilians

Overview

In early July 2026 the French tax administration set a 30 July deadline for claiming a €100 fuel aid aimed at low‑income, high‑mileage commuters. By that date more than 1.2 million people had applied and up to two million remained eligible.

On 23 July the government, led by Energy Minister Maud Bregeon, pushed the deadline back to the end of August as fuel prices again rose above €2 per litre. At that point around 970 000 payments had already been dispatched. Economy Minister Roland Lescure and Commerce Minister Serge Papin were scheduled to meet fuel distributors, and TotalEnergies announced the reinstatement of a price‑cap at its French stations.

A later fiscal notice issued on 31 July confirmed the fuel premium would remain available until 31 August and placed the extension within a broader August 2026 tax calendar. The notice set deadlines for property‑tax, wealth‑tax and other levy payments, announced a 2.5 % increase in household electricity rates from 1 August, and introduced stricter criteria for access to the vehicle‑registration system (SIV). The automotive union Mobilians welcomed the security measures but called for further anti‑fraud actions.

Overall, the timeline shows an initial July deadline, a swift extension to August to accommodate continued price pressure, and accompanying fiscal adjustments affecting taxes, electricity pricing and vehicle‑registration rules.
