French fishing vessel sinking in the English Channel

Overview

A French-registered fishing vessel, the Maranello, sank in the English Channel on August 29, approximately 48 kilometers southwest of Plymouth. The vessel, based in Saint-Brieuc, reportedly encountered issues with its fishing gear before sinking.

During the incident, the trawler Stradale rescued three of the five crew members, who were subsequently taken to hospitals in Plymouth and Truro. Despite an intensive multi-agency search operation involving the HM Coastguard, RNLI, and the French Navy, two crew members remained missing. Authorities eventually suspended the search, citing the “known limits of human survivability in current water temperatures.”

On September 5, divers recovered the bodies of the two missing Breton fishermen following improved weather conditions. The Saint-Brieuc prosecutor’s office confirmed the deceased have been identified as the ship’s captain and boatswain. Following the location of the wreckage earlier in the week, the investigation, led by the maritime gendarmerie of Brest, has transitioned into an inquiry to determine the exact causes of death.
