Frente Amplio coalition election preparations

Overview

The Frente Amplio coalition has finalized several key candidate placements for the Spanish general elections on November 29. Ada Colau, the former mayor of Barcelona, will lead the coalition as the candidate for President of the Government and will head the list in Barcelona.

In Madrid, the list is headed by Emilio Delgado, followed by Tesh Sidi and Toni Valero. Valero’s placement in Madrid has drawn criticism from former Vice President Pablo Iglesias, who questioned why Valero is not leading the list in Málaga; however, Izquierda Unida coordinator Antonio Maíllo defended the decision, noting Valero represents the organization following his primary victory. In Tarragona, Ester Roca has been selected to lead the list, succeeded by Òscar Sendra in second and Eva Amposta in third, with Jordi Collado in sixth. Luis Omar El Gabry Bravo will run for the Senate in the province.

As the registration deadline approaches, the coalition faces uncertainty in several constituencies across Andalusia, Galicia, the Basque Country, Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, and Castilla y León, which still lack designated candidates for Congress. While the coalition reaffirmed alliances with territorial partners like Chunta Aragonesista and Compromís, it has broken with Podemos, which will run independently in all eight Andalusian provinces. Additionally, Chunta Aragonesista has opted to leave the progressive path in Teruel to support the PSOE. Campaign spokesperson Pablo Bustinduy stated the coalition aims to be a “nationwide option for the working classes,” though it remains unclear if further agreements will be made to include independent Podemos candidates in certain areas.
