Galicia summer festivals and tourism surge

In early August 2026 Galicia’s coastal cities staged a packed summer programme. The XVIII Bandeira de Traiñeiras Cidade de Ferrol opened on 1 August with a traineras regatta on the Ferrol estuary, followed the next day by the Travesía a Nado de la Ría swimming crossing in Vigo, drawing hundreds of athletes and spectators.

The cultural calendar continued with Pontevedra’s free‑entry Urbana Monte Porreiro festival on 4–5 August, an open‑air event in the Parque do Mirador de Monte Porreiro featuring acts such as Al Safir, 9Louro, Daniela Garsal and Kid Mount. Simultaneously, Vigo hosted the X International Piano Competition (7–14 August), attracting about 400 pianists from 77 countries; the opening concert paired legendary Martha Argerich with Galician pianist Pablo Galdo, and actor Jeremy Irons narrated Saint‑Saëns’s “The Carnival of the Animals”. A grand piano was placed on a central Vigo street for public use.

Additional summer highlights included a free Cuban‑themed festival organised by Vibra en Clave on 2 August at Praia da Xunqueira in Moaña, offering live music, DJ sets, Cuban cuisine and dance workshops. At the same time, the O Marisquiño urban‑sports and youth‑culture festival turned Vigo into a hub for extreme‑sports fans, sharply reducing short‑term rental availability and driving nightly rates from €170 to about €350. Hotel occupancy in the city was already near 91 % for August, underscoring the tourism surge accompanying the region’s intensive summer schedule.
