Gender equality initiatives in Spanish municipalities

Overview

Spanish municipalities and provincial councils have implemented various local initiatives focused on gender equality, empowerment, and the prevention of gender-based violence.

In early October, programs were launched to promote women’s autonomy and economic independence. In Fuente Palmera, the Equality Delegation introduced activities to commemorate the International Day of Rural Women, including citrus pruning courses and pelvic health workshops. The municipality also officially joined the FEMP manifesto. Similarly, Bermeo announced a feminist autumn program running from October to December, focusing on empowerment, health, sustainability, and literature. This includes a public assembly to design a new Feminist Empowerment Space and workshops on DIY skills and textile recycling.

Recognition has also been given to municipalities for educational efforts in preventing gender violence. The Mutua Madrileña Foundation and Antena 3 Noticias honored several towns, including Torrejón de Ardoz for its ‘Construyendo puentes: igualdad y nuevas masculinidades’ project, which engages over 1,450 students through stereotype awareness and socio-emotional intervention. Lanjarón was also among the 35 municipalities distinguished for conducting equality workshops and awareness campaigns in schools and families.

Further provincial-level efforts have emerged, such as the Diputación de Sevilla launching specialized training for legal advisors and equality agents to improve care for victims of violence. In Badajoz, the Diputación de Badajoz introduced ‘Activa la Racha’, an educational project using an online platform to help adolescents identify discriminatory behaviors and question stereotypes, concluding with a session titled ‘Nuestra voz en el Pleno’ for youth to share proposals with the provincial council.
