Germany Girocard and account initiatives
Overview
In late July 2026 Euro Kartensysteme confirmed that the German Girocard will be upgraded from 2027 with in‑app payments, hotel and car‑rental bookings, stronger electronic age verification, merchant‑whitelisting and robust customer authentication. The upgrade follows a 2021 Federal Court ruling that illegal checking‑account fees require explicit consent, prompting consumer groups to supply template letters for refunds.
In early August, major banks rolled out cash‑bonus campaigns to attract new Giro‑account holders. ING offered up to €300 for opening a first checking account (and optionally a securities depot), while Postbank provided a one‑time €150 credit for new online Giro‑pur accounts, both subject to deposit and activity conditions.
Later in August, ING Deutschland announced it will issue its own credit card before the Christmas shopping season, with broader availability by mid‑2027. The new card aims to fill a gap for customers who have a Giro account but lack a credit card for travel and online purchases abroad. Simultaneously, ING is redesigning its Giro‑account offerings, developing new models to complement the forthcoming credit‑card product and the enhanced Girocard functionality.
