Ghana commemorates Atta Mills anniversary

The commemorations continued into the final days of July 2026. On 24 July, President John Dramani Mahama led a wreath‑laying ceremony at Asomdwee Park, reiterating John Evans Atta Mills’s legacy of humility and peaceful governance. He joined the Speaker of Parliament, traditional leaders, senior ministers and members of the Mills family, and again called for stronger institutions, improved waste‑management and protection of flood‑retention sites. The same day Professor Kwabena Frimpong‑Boateng delivered a lecture at the University for Professional Studies, praising Mills’s commitment to rule of law and scientific development while warning that recent floods in Greater Accra expose systemic weaknesses.

On 26 July, Mahama again laid a wreath at Asomdwee Park, urging Ghanaians to emulate Mills’s values. Professor Frimpong‑Boateng highlighted a deeper structural crisis, noting under‑funded research bodies such as the CSIR, Atomic Energy Commission and EPA, and urged generous state funding to close the technology gap and build local industrial capacity. Both events reinforced the memorial’s dual focus on honoring Mills and pressing for institutional and technological reforms.

The renovations of Asomdwee Park and the Atta Mills Memorial House remain underway as symbols of the nation’s commitment to the former president’s vision.
