Ghanaian tourism minister regional tour and heritage efforts
Overview
Ghanaian Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has expanded her focus on heritage conservation through both international diplomacy and domestic site protection.
Following a tour of the Bono and Bono East Regions to assess cultural assets and address land encroachment, the Minister is now pursuing international partnerships to safeguard Ghana’s heritage. In discussions with the Korean National Commission for UNESCO, Gomashie emphasized that partnerships with the Republic of Korea should prioritize “people-to-people exchanges and cultural understanding” to benefit younger generations, rather than focusing solely on financial and technical support. This follows UNESCO recommendations from 2022 and 2024 regarding the safeguarding of heritage sites.
Additionally, Gomashie has engaged the Danish Ambassador to discuss potential collaborations for the restoration of Osu Castle and Fort Prinzenstein. Domestically, the Minister continues to address land security, reiterating that the government will protect national treasures, such as the Kintampo Waterfalls, from encroachers and land grabbers at all costs.
