Giovanni Nicelli Airport centenary celebrations
Overview
The Giovanni Nicelli Airport in Venice is marking its centenary, celebrating 100 years since its first scheduled passenger flight on August 18, 1926. Historically, the airport served as a vital link between Italy and Central Europe, significantly reducing travel times to cities like Vienna.
To commemorate the milestone, the airport is hosting an exhibition titled ‘Cent’anni di aviazione. Aeroporto Nicelli 1926-2026’ in its main hall throughout September. Curated by Vittorio Baroni, the twelve-panel exhibit uses a design resembling cinematic frames to detail the facility’s evolution from early civil routes and pioneers through its wartime years to its modern operations. The display is free to the public until September 30.
In conjunction with the Venice International Film Festival, Vanity Fair Italia and Junkers Aircraft hosted ‘The Fly Experience’ at the airport. This event featured two Junkers A50 Heritage aircraft—the St. Moritz Edition and the Venezia Edition—within the hangar. The Venezia Edition specifically pays homage to the first Italian civil aviation passenger connections that departed from Nicelli in 1926 using Junkers aircraft.
Additionally, the airport has been nominated for the FAI ‘Luoghi del Cuore 2026’ awards. Efforts are underway to encourage public voting via the Fondo per l’Ambiente website to support the preservation of its architectural and historical heritage.
