KGK and media leaders address local media challenges

Overview

The Global Journalists Council (KGK) concluded its Local Media Forum in Afyonkarahisar on September 21, 2026. During the assembly, KGK President Mehmet Ali Dim addressed the economic and structural crises facing the sector, emphasizing that a professional union law is necessary to ensure the survival of print journalism. Dim warned that the disappearance of print media could negatively impact the public’s right to receive news, noting that rising costs for paper, ink, and printing materials are forcing some local newspapers to print in different cities.

Following the forum, the ‘Vefa Buluşması ve Basın Çalıştayı’ (Loyalty Meeting and Press Workshop) was held in Aksaray on September 25-26. This event, organized by Abdulkadir Ay to mark the 30th anniversary of a previous Presidents' Council meeting, brought together journalists, media federation presidents, and communication students to discuss the evolution of the Anatolian press.

Discussions in Aksaray centered on the digital transformation of journalism and the impact of artificial intelligence. Participants stressed the importance of maintaining verification and public interest in an era of rapid information. Industry leaders from the International Press Confederation and the Anatolian Press Union also joined the call for institutionalization and the establishment of a media professional union to uphold ethical standards and quality within the Turkish media landscape.
