Global tungsten resource exploration and development

Overview

Strategic minerals companies continue to expand tungsten exploration and development activities globally.

In Australia, Tungsten Mining has made significant progress at its wholly owned Watershed project in Far North Queensland. The company has secured all primary development approvals, including its Environmental Authority and a determination that the project is “not a controlled action” under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act. An Indigenous Land Use Agreement is in place with the Western Yalanji Aboriginal Corporation.

To support the project, Tungsten Mining appointed Cutfield Freeman & Co to structure a debt package, evaluating sources such as commercial banks, private credit, export credit agencies, and government concessional sources. Following a preliminary economic evaluation indicating a pre-tax net present value of $1.3 billion, the company is targeting a final investment decision by late 2026, with a Definitive Feasibility Study scheduled for completion in October. Early site works, including drilling and access-road construction, are underway to support a production target in the first half of 2027.

In the United Kingdom, Strategic Minerals has commenced a 22,500-metre diamond drilling programme at the Redmoor project in Cornwall. Utilizing three rigs across 53 planned holes, the campaign aims to expand resources at the site, which currently holds 17.4 million tonnes of tungsten-trioxide equivalent.

In the United States, Great Western Mining Corporation PLC has begun drilling at the Defender Tungsten Project in Nevada. The program is testing a 600 to 1,000-metre corridor, with drill assay results expected throughout September and October 2026 as the company works toward a maiden Mineral Resource Estimate by year-end.
