Greece €1 trillion+ budget package
Overview
In early July 2026 the Greek government outlined a fiscal stimulus projected to exceed €1 trillion, with the Prime Minister slated to review the proposals after 20 August. The plan focused on tax relief for businesses and households, adjustments to freelancer income thresholds, reforms of professional fees and potential corporate profit‑tax changes, while completing the removal of the personal pension offset and exempting primary residences in small municipalities from ENFIA.
By the end of July the package was formally announced at the Thessaloniki International Fair. Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis reiterated that the stimulus would surpass €1 trillion, emphasizing goals of improving public finances, boosting employment and growth, and tightening tax‑evasion controls. He noted Greece’s investment ratio had risen to roughly 17‑18 % of GDP and exports had doubled, providing greater fiscal capacity.
On 2 August Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakas presented a four‑year economic programme expanding the package to about €1.5 trillion. The plan includes major tax reforms for freelancers and SMEs, a reduction of advance tax payments, and €850 million earmarked for 2026 to cushion households from rising energy costs, alongside continued fuel subsidies, wage support and measures for retirees, farmers and entrepreneurs. Pierrakas framed the reforms as a coherent, long‑term strategy ahead of the 2027 national elections.
