Greek business growth and corporate restructuring
Overview
Greek business activity showed significant growth and structural change during the first half of 2026. According to ELSTAT, business turnover rose to 247.08 billion euros, a 4.6% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Growth accelerated in the second quarter, reaching 135.81 billion euros, which marked the highest quarterly turnover since 2019. Key sectors driving this expansion included Education, Manufacturing, and Water Supply and Wastewater Treatment.
Parallel to this turnover growth, the Greek business landscape experienced a wave of mergers and acquisitions with transaction values estimated to exceed €7 billion. These developments spanned various sectors, including retail, banking, infrastructure, and technology.
In the retail sector, turnover reached 20.17 billion euros, up 2.8% from the previous year. Regional performance showed strength in Epirus and Central Macedonia. New data from the second quarter of 2026 highlights specific regional success in Crete, where retail turnover surpassed 1 billion euros, reaching 1.003 billion euros. This 3.5% increase outperformed the national average growth of 2.8%.
Within the Cretan market, Chalkiadakis SA reported significant financial progress, with turnover rising to 266.23 million euros from 239.79 million euros the previous year. Despite these gains, management expressed concerns regarding potential economic obstacles, including “trade protectionism, geopolitical instability in the Middle East, and inflationary pressures,” noting that new tariffs could impact demand for Greek products and deter future investments.
