Greek Left Coalition opposition to Mitsotakis government

Overview

The Greek Left Coalition (ELAS), led by Alexis Tsipras, has intensified its political opposition to the Mitsotakis government, focusing on administrative reform, economic policy, and disaster management.

Initially, the coalition criticized a new public administration bill, labeling it a “monument to institutional regression, party patronage, and favoritism.” Tsipras accused the government of corruption and mismanagement regarding the diversion of Recovery Fund resources. The coalition also attacked Minister of State Akis Skertsos over the Chalkidiki wildfires, accusing him of using “statistical alchemy” to downplay destruction.

ELAS has recently expanded its critiques to public safety and agriculture. The party’s Citizen Protection sector dismissed official reports of dismantled criminal organizations as “communication shows,” demanding specific data on serious crimes like contract killings. Regarding the foot-and-mouth disease crisis in Lesvos, the party accused the government of “5.5 months of inertia,” stating the livestock industry is at a breaking point.

On the economic front, spokesperson Fragiskos Koutentakis outlined a strategy focused on increasing production and wealth redistribution, including VAT reductions on essential foods. More recently, following Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s interview at the World Economic Forum (WEF), spokesperson Theoni Koufonikolakou criticized the Prime Minister for displaying “arrogance” and a “lack of substantive arguments.” Koufonikolakou argued that despite governing under ideal fiscal conditions post-bailout, the administration has overseen a contraction in purchasing power and increased corruption, claiming the current economic model has led the country “backward rather than forward.”
