Greek military leadership regional activities

Overview

In August 2026, high-ranking Greek military officials conducted a series of official visits and inspections to reinforce regional security and operational readiness.

General Dimitrios Houpis, Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, visited Cyprus on August 20-21 to bolster military ties and coordinate defense efforts with Cypriot officials, including the Minister of Defence. This visit followed a trip to Israel and included meetings with the Chief of the National Guard General Staff and a visit to the Hellenic Force in Cyprus (ELDYK).

Concurrently, from August 18 to 20, Lieutenant General Georgios Kostidis, Chief of the Hellenic Army General Staff, conducted inspections of military facilities in Crete and Gavdos. During this period, he visited the headquarters of the 1st Paratrooper Battalion in Maleme to receive briefings on operational and training activities, and concluded the trip at the Gavdos Observation Post to review its mission and facilities.

Following the Cretan inspections, Lieutenant General Kostidis visited the School of Non-Commissioned Officers (SMY) in Trikala. During this visit, he was briefed on the school’s educational activities and projects, and addressed students regarding the importance of training and guidance for upcoming first-year enlistments.
